A castle above the river
Built in 1185 by Prince John—later King John of England—Ardfinnan Castle was founded as a sister to Lismore Castle, guarding the crossing of the River Suir. One of Ireland’s earliest Norman castles, it is among the oldest built here by the Norman Crown.
The castle stands above the medieval bridge, four miles south of Cahir and seven miles west of Clonmel, with the Knockmealdown Mountains behind. It remains a private residence and is not open to the public.
