Choosing where to stay
Ardfinnan sits in the Suir valley in south County Tipperary, with the Knockmealdown Mountains to the south. It is a village of under a thousand people, so it is best treated as a place to visit rather than a place to base yourself. The castle is a private residence and does not offer accommodation.
Happily, several historic towns lie within easy reach. Each has a different character, and the right choice depends on whether you want to be closest to Ardfinnan, have the most amenities, cross the mountains, or combine your trip with other famous sights.
Cahir — the closest base
Cahir is only about 10 km (4 miles) from Ardfinnan, making it the nearest town and the simplest choice for a short stay. It has its own celebrated castle on the River Suir and the Swiss Cottage nearby, so you can fill a day without long drives.
Staying in Cahir suits visitors who want to see Ardfinnan's bridge and castle view early in the morning or in the evening light, when the valley is at its quietest.
Clonmel — the most amenities
Clonmel lies about 14 km (7 miles) from Ardfinnan and is the largest town in the area. As a busy county town on the Suir, it offers the widest range of places to eat, shop and stay, which makes it a comfortable base for longer trips.
From Clonmel it is a short drive up the valley to Ardfinnan, and the Suir Blueway connects you with the river along the way.
Lismore — the sister castle
Lismore, across the Knockmealdown Mountains in County Waterford, is home to Lismore Castle — founded by Prince John as the sister of Ardfinnan Castle. Staying here lets you follow the story of the two castles from one side of the mountains to the other.
The drive between Lismore and the Tipperary side of the mountains passes through the Vee, one of the most scenic routes in the region, so the journey is part of the experience.
Cashel — for a wider heritage tour
Cashel is a little further afield than the other three towns but is a popular base for exploring County Tipperary's heritage more broadly. Visitors who want to see several of the county's historic sites often choose it, adding Cahir and Ardfinnan as part of a day's circuit to the south.
If your trip is about more than one castle, Cashel gives you a central starting point for exploring the wider county.
Tips for planning
Whichever base you choose, a car makes it easiest to reach Ardfinnan, which lies on the R665 and R670 roads. Allow time to stop on the medieval bridge — the best, and only, place to take in the castle — and remember that the castle itself is private and cannot be visited.
Combining two bases can work well too: a night in Cahir or Clonmel for the Suir valley, and a night in Lismore after crossing the Vee.
